TURP and Laser Prostate Surgery
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) and Laser Prostate Surgery are effective treatments for relieving urinary symptoms caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

What is TURP?

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure used to treat urinary problems due to an enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The procedure involves removing portions of the prostate that are pressing against the urethra, allowing urine to flow more freely.

Preparation: The procedure is usually performed under general or spinal anaesthesia.

Surgical Process: A resectoscope (a thin tube with a light, camera, and loop of wire) is inserted through the urethra. The loop of wire uses electric current to cut away the excess prostate tissue obstructing urine flow. The removed tissue is flushed out of the bladder.

Conditions Treated: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Post-Operative Care: A catheter is inserted into the bladder to help drain urine and prevent blood clots. The catheter is typically removed the next day.

What is Laser Prostate Surgery?

Laser Prostate Surgery is a alternative to TURP for treating an enlarged prostate, especially very large prostates. This procedure uses laser energy to remove or vaporise excess prostate tissue, reducing urinary symptoms.

Preparation: Similar to TURP, the procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia.

Surgical Process: A laser fibre is inserted through the urethra using a cystoscope. The laser energy is used to precisely remove or vaporise the obstructive prostate tissue.

Conditions Treated: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Post-Operative Care: A catheter may be inserted to help with urination during the initial recovery period. The catheter is usually removed the next day.

Both TURP and Laser Prostate Surgery offer significant benefits for men experiencing urinary symptoms due to an enlarged prostate. These procedures can improve urine flow, reduce urinary frequency and urgency, and decrease the risk of urinary tract infections.
