Peyronie’s Disease: Symptoms, causes, and surgical options

Peyronie’s Disease is a condition where fibrous scar tissue develops in the tunica albuginea of the corpus cavernosum of the penis. This leads to abnormal bending or curvature. Although not life-threatening, it can significantly affect a man’s physical and emotional well-being.

The most noticeable symptom of Peyronie’s Disease is a significant curve or bend in the penis, often becoming apparent during erections. Some men also experience pain, particularly during sexual activity, as well as a reduction in penis length. In some cases, the condition may contribute to erectile dysfunction (ED), making it difficult to achieve or maintain an erection.

The precise cause of Peyronie’s Disease isn’t fully understood, but it is often linked to microtrauma – small injuries that can occur during sexual activity or from other physical impacts. In addition to trauma, factors like genetics and age play a role. Men with a family history of Peyronie’s Disease or other connective tissue disorders are at higher risk. While the condition is more common in men over 50, it can develop at any age. The estimated incidence is around 9%.

Treatment options for Peyronie’s Disease range from conservative management to corrective surgery, depending on the severity of symptoms. There is no oral medication that can cure Peyronie’s Disease.

For severe cases, especially where the curvature causes difficulty with intercourse, surgery can restore the penis’s normal shape and function. Plication surgery involves stitching the opposite side of the curve to straighten the penis.
There is general agreement that an absolute minimum of 3 months of stable, pain-free disease is required before surgery is offered.

The goal of surgery is to achieve a functionally straight penis.

Living with Peyronie’s Disease can be difficult, but help is available. Consulting a urologist with expertise in this condition is an essential first step in finding relief.
